Starting Your Resume

You’re ready to start applying to new jobs, but you still need your resume. How do you start it? Here are some guidelines and reminders to help get your resume started.

  1. Look at the job description for the position you are applying and write down specific words and phrases used in it. Use these words as a content guide for your resume. Not only will this help you get started with your content, but it will also personalize your resume for the position you want, which most recruiters like to see.
  2. Your resume should be in reverse chronological order. List your most recent experience at the top.
  3. Your resume should be one page, two at the most. This is what most recruiters consider the ideal resume length.
  4. Don’t worry about making your resume look creative – unless you’re applying for a creative position. Instead, focus on the content, grammar, and on making it look organized and neat.
